Commander Chris Hadfield visits Canada House

Commander Chris Hadfield of the International Space Station visited Canada House in London on 19th December 2013 for the ‘Space Oddity Party’. In his talk, he said:

‘Exploration is fundamental to the human race.’

‘When you go round the world 2,500 times, it gives you a creeping sense of ‘us’. You see the same patterns repeated all around the world. We are all the same, we want peace and grace, opportunities for our children. It makes me optimistic and less fearful.’

On seeing the Earth from space:

‘The world is vast, magnificent, ancient and resilient.’

On future challenges and space travel:

‘We will go as far as our imagination will take us.’

On singing in space:

‘Music connects the world.’

  1. How very lucky we humans are to be on this earth at the same time
as Prof. Hawking, to learn, if only a fraction, of what this genius of a man has uncovered and introduced to our collective consciousness. But aside from his brilliant mind, or maybe because OF it, his sense of humour, his capacity to love, the depth of his perceptive powers and his immense courage leave one utterly intimidated. I am an old lady of European origin, have experienced many of life’s travails, have known many people in various professions and varied positions of great responsibility, but by none have I been as awestruck as by Prof. Hawking. May the Fates grant him many years of contentment and comfort – my heartfelt wishes go out to him, to both ladies with whom he shared the past years and those which are to come and of course to Lucy and siblings.
